CHARITY POLO TOURNAMENT
- ROYAL MILITARY ACADEMY SANDHURST
QUALITY players and quality polo were again the order of the day at The Royal Military Academy Sandhurst charity tournament in aid of The British Forces Foundation. Spectators were treated to some fantastic competition, and once again HRH The Prince of Wales, along with Prince William and Prince Harry, took part in the event. So too did the touring team from the Eastern Circuit United States Polo Association. They played for the Sudan Cup in the first match of the tournament against the Combined Services Polo Association. The CSPA were too strong for the visitors on this occasion and ran out winners by seven goals to three and a half. The second game of the afternoon saw HRH The Prince of Wales' team take on the Commandant's invitational team. Princes Charles, William and Harry were joined by one of the best polo players in the world, Carlos Gracida. His brother Memo, another sporting great, lined up in opposition alongside Tim Gannon, Matias Hermes and John Goodman. They capped a fine performance with a five goals to three victory to lift the Sandhurst Cup. In a very close final game of the tournmanent, the RMAS won the Le Marchant Cup by beating the Pony Club by five and a half goals to five RMAS Commandant, Maj Gen Ritchie said: "This event has succeeded over the past few years in raising a wonderful amount of money for The British Forces Foundation of which HRH The Prince of Wales is Patron. "We are deeply indebted to Tim Gannon, John Goodman and to the Royal Bank of Scotland for their most generous donations and support to the event." Maj Gen Ritchie added: "Sandhurst provides many of the officer cadets with their first opportunity to become involved in this exciting sport. Through the support of both the Army and the Combined Services Polo Association these new players will have the chance to develop their skills and deepen their enthusiasm whilst at the Academy."
